Danish ICMIF member LB Forsikring has announced that it is now ready to start inviting its members to download and use its new driving app Bilist+ (Motorist+ in English) that aims to prevent car accidents and car damage claims for the benefit of the individual member and the wider community. The new app also supports LB Forsikring’s goal of making insurance redundant by shifting the focus from insurance to prevention. In other words, they want to reduce the number of accidents and also the extent of any damage/claims.

Via various algorithms, Bilist+ evaluates an LB Forsikring member’s driving behaviour, including distracted driving, hard braking, mileage and time of day. Drivers can monitor their trips, driving styles and levels of distraction on the app.

“At LB Forsikring, our ambition is to take responsibility and help where we can. On the other hand, we must, of course, help our members when an accident occurs. But we also have a task in preventing accidents from occurring in the first place. This is where Bilist+ will contribute to pursuing this ambition, and we are pleased that we are now ready to launch the product,” says Mikkel Frost Kopenhagen, Director of Business Development and Innovation at LB Forsikring.

In 2022, 73,595 car claims were filed, and the total payment of the car claims filed by LB Forsikring in 2022 was DKK 482.6 million (USD 70.27 million). The value of preventing these accidents would therefore be significant – for the member-owned insurer and also for society. The goals of Motorist+ are:

  • ensuring safer traffic;
  • reducing social costs (hospitalisations etc)
  • reducing climate impact by there being less damages to repair.

LB Forsikring ran a test pilot on Bilist+ from November 2020 to June 2022. The test showed the potential of Bilist+, which improves driving behaviour by making members’ driving more visible whilst incentivising them to improve the way in which they drive. In addition, during the summer of 2023, more than 2000 members also had the opportunity to test Bilist+, and it went well.

“We can see that the members who drive with Bilist+ have less instances of hard braking. There has also been a reduction in mobile phone use while driving. Of course, we are pleased about this, because it helps to increase road safety, and in the end it should result in fewer and less serious claims. We hope that as many members as possible will accept the offer and make use of the app in their daily driving,” says Mikkel Frost Kopenhagen.

The new app is an offer for those members who would like to make use of it, and members will be invited to join the solution on an ongoing basis. The benefit for members is that if they demonstrate good driving they can earn a reduction in their deductible.

“Our ambition is to give our members positive incentives to drive more safely. We are in the process of developing solutions to help prevent claims from occurring. We previously launched LeakBot, which aims to prevent water damage, now we are ready with this solution for traffic,” says Mikkel Frost Kopenhagen.
