Univé’s cyber proposition: Protecting members from cyber risk

ICMIF Biennial Conference 2024: Unlocking new opportunities in the evolving risk landscape

Univé (Netherlands) has taken an innovative approach to cybersecurity and risk management. Rooted in a history of social entrepreneurship and cooperative principles established by its founder during the late 18th century, Unive has grown into a modern organisation serving 1.8 million members. This case study presentation highlights the company’s comprehensive response to rising cyber threats, including the establishment of 24/7 support, phishing prevention programmes, digital security scans, and advanced tools like scam blockers. Unive's proactive stance extends to future projects addressing digital legacies and cyber risks for young people, all underpinned by a commitment to community, innovation, and mutual benefit.

In an era where cybersecurity threats are escalating, Univé Schade, a cooperative insurance company rooted in the Netherlands, has made significant strides in addressing digital risks. The organisation, which has a remarkable 230-year history, operates under a unique model combining regional independence with central coordination, setting an example of adaptability and innovation in the modern age.

Since its inception, Univé Schade has prioritised protecting its members from risks, evolving from insuring cattle against fires in stables to addressing the complex threats of the digital age. With 1.8 million members and a commitment to mutual benefits over shareholder profit, Univé Schade continues to uphold its founding principles of prevention, mitigation, and restoration.

The rising tide of cyber risks

Cybercrime has emerged as a dominant threat, affecting both personal and professional spheres. Today, the most prevalent risks include phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. Recognising these dangers, Univé Schade adopted a proactive stance, expanding its services to encompass cybersecurity solutions tailored to the evolving needs of its members.

To combat cyber threats, Univé Schade introduced an array of innovative solutions:

  1. Cyber Helpdesk: A 24/7 support service that provides immediate assistance to individuals affected by cyber incidents. This initiative, developed with Cyber Scout, underscores the importance of timely and professional intervention.
  2. Cyber Fit: An educational programme designed for SMEs to bolster their resilience against phishing and other cyberattacks. This training has proven effective, reducing susceptibility to phishing attempts to less than 10%.
  3. Router Scan: A tool that evaluates the security of digital entry points such as ports and Wi-Fi networks, ensuring the integrity of a user’s digital infrastructure.
  4. Scamblocker: A revolutionary service that warns users of potentially malicious websites. By integrating this feature into members’ internet usage, Univé Schade not only protects them from harm but also reinforces the company’s presence as a trusted digital guardian.

Univé Schade is not resting on its laurels. Its forward-looking initiatives include:

  • Digital Life Legacy: A service designed to manage and protect the digital assets of individuals after they pass away, ensuring their online presence is handled with care and security.
  • Cyber Young: A programme aimed at supporting younger individuals in navigating cyber risks, with a particular focus on addressing issues like sexting. This service offers a confidential channel for assistance, empowering the younger generation to confront and overcome digital vulnerabilities.

A call to action

Univé Schade’s journey demonstrates that cybersecurity is not just a technical challenge but a societal imperative. The company’s focus on prevention, education, and support underscores the importance of addressing cyber risks holistically. Whether through assisting a 91-year-old victim of a scam or guiding SMEs toward better digital hygiene, Univé Schade’s efforts are a testament to the power of community-driven innovation.

As Univé Schade continues to expand its digital safety initiatives, it serves as a reminder that, in a world increasingly reliant on technology, protecting the digital frontier is as critical as safeguarding physical assets. By fostering a culture of awareness and resilience, Univé Schade is not only preserving its legacy but also shaping a secure future for its members and beyond.
