Providing value to members through co-creation initiatives: Synergy through cooperation and “Kyoso”

ICMIF Biennial Conference 2024: Putting a purpose-led strategy into practice

A collaborative initiative between two major Japanese cooperative organisations, Kokumin Kyosai Co-op and CO-OP Kyosai, focuses on mutual insurance and community support. These entities, initially serving distinct target groups (labour unions and consumers), have expanded their cooperation to address broader societal challenges, including disaster relief, traffic safety, and sustainable community building. Their joint efforts include distributing safety flags for children, providing disaster relief materials, and engaging in disaster awareness campaigns. They also support winter sports for people with disabilities and foster international collaboration, such as hosting Ukrainian athletes. The overarching goal is to leverage their combined strengths to enhance social welfare, promote resilience against disasters, and contribute to the sustainable development of local communities, reflecting their commitment to cooperative principles and mutual aid.
